I have made many mistakes in choosing my staff members for Zeno Designs. Many of them ripped images and copied many things from our forum. Of course, I have found out everytime. Before you start your forum, pick ONE person whom you really trust to help make the boards and images.
Start off finding more staff members by having an applications board. After all of your staff members has had a say in this application, make your decision. Make sure you are not the only one making the decision. Other staff members may feel left out if you do so. When you have new staff members, do not give them too much power over the forum at first. Once you think you can trust them, you may give them more power.
Follow these rules for success in your forum and staff:
1. Do not give out staff openings for new members who have just joined. The member should be decently active and a regular member. This way, your forum will not be flooded with staff members who are not as active as other staff members.
2. Do not give staff openings to people who are rude and do not respect other members of your forum. They will not do any good to it. Until you can trust them, ask first if they want to be one. Good staff members should also frequently contribute to the forum.
3. Make sure your moderators and admins do not have too much power. Make sure they only have the neccessary powers to finish the job, not all of the powers a moderator can have. Moderators should not be allowed to delete threads. They should only be allowed to lock, sticky, and move threads. Moderators should also not be able to modify posts unless absolutely neccesary. Moderators may edit the post and change the whole meaning of the post.
These are some mistakes I have learned from Zeno Designs, my site. The above suggestions are to make sure that you do not run into the situation at Zeno. All of the problems are probably fixed at Zeno right now, but remember: choose your staff members wisely.
Quick Tips
1. You should only have 1 or 2 extra admins (other than you). Too many can start a power struggle.
2. Remember to choose your staff members wisely. Do not choose newcomers to your forum. Choose active and regular members.
3. Watch out for rippers. Your applicants may seem to be good at graphics or coding, but they may have ripped. Search Google for the title of the code or the name of the image. Google is your best friend.
4. Make sure that your moderators do not have too much power. The power to edit and delete posts and threads is not wise. Moderators may change a post totally and make a member look bad and even get in trouble.
